Aurora Borealis Shetland 12 April 2010
| Just as we were updating the site on 11 April came the news we'd been waiting for - Aurora! We abandoned all further site update work and headed out, in the end for 5 hours - but what a result, with spectacular aurora, both out in the country and in town - despite all the light pollution! We said over on our blog that it was the best aurora for 2 years but having examined the images and seen all the colours that were present (albeit faintly) we now think it was the best we've seen since 2006. Apparently, this was a G2 Class storm on the NOAA Space Weather Scale for Geomagnetic Storms. In any case there were fantastc streaks, arcs and dancing sheets racing across the sky towards the end of the display. They were fairly faint and fast moving so very difficult to image - the last few shots give an idea what it was like.
