WWII Radar Station, Lamba Ness, Skaw, Unst, Shetland

Chain Home Low Radar Station on 18 September 2005

This station was built by the Royal Air Force during World War II and covers an extensive area (approx 2 sq. km). Chain Home was the codename for about 60 radar stations around the British coast and this was a Chain Home Low station, i.e. short-range. There was another station in the network at Noss Hill, Dunrossness, in the south of Shetland. After the War it became a ROTOR station (a different radar system established in response to the perceived nuclear threat from the Soviet Union after 1949). The station has been largely dismantled or demolished and most of the structures that remain are derelict, however, much of the layout may be observed and the bunkers are largely intact.
