More good news! I just found out
that my Aurora
Wadbister photo has been judged the best of all the
entries to the Highland Challenge annual inter-club
photographic competition between nine camera clubs
across the north of Scotland. More details and my
initial reaction in the Shetland Times report
here. Technical details - Stitched panorama of 11
images, each shot at 13s F/2.8 ISO 1250. Nikon D750,

I feel a bit
like a celebrity today because I found a North American
Mourning Dove in my garden! This is the
first record for Shetland and only the 5th record for
Britain - it's what's known to birders as a "Mega"! I
took the photo above on 27th December.
I can now
accept payment by card at most locations (so long as an
internet connection is available) so do take advantage
28 September 2015 A Total Lunar Eclipse
occurred early this morning (BST) but, unfortunately,
most of the show was obscured in Shetland due to cloud.
I did manage to get a few photos, just before and just
after the start of totality about 0300 but that was it.

Aurora season is here! I usually see my first Northern Lghts in August,
often around the time when astronomical darkness returns and, sure
enough, last night I wasn't disappointed. It wasn't a very strong
display but the colours were very nice and I managed to create this
panorama just before dawn at Wadbister. See a larger version of this
photo and read more about what else I saw including the wildlife I
encountered last night over on my

Exciting news from the
Icelandic Orca Project!
They have used my photo to confirm the presence of the Killer
Whale known as"012" in the Shetland catalogue and "T-38" in the
Icelandic catalogue off St Kilda on 1 July at the end of our two week
visit there. This is the oldest whale the Project team know to move
between Iceland and Scotland but she was last seen in Iceland in 2013,
first identified in 1987! Thanks to them for the news but especially to
Kilda Cruises who helped to make the encounter so unforgettable.
23 July 2015 I'm happy to say that I have resolved the problem
that caused most of my galleries to be blocked and there remains just
the odd isolated glitch here and there that I'm working on. Thank you
for your patience!

and service is now back to normal - apologies for any delay and
inconvenience as I catch up with outstanding tasks.
I hope to be able to share more of my images very soon.

Solar Eclipse! I viewed it from Gulberwick. The eclipse
here resulted in about 97% of the surface of the Sun
being obscured by the Moon, which was a fantastic sight.
Unfortunately the weather was somewhat challenging and
cloud hid some parts of the show. However, and luckily,
the mid eclipse was mostly visible, allowing the above
photo just a minute or two past actual maximum eclipse.
I have posted a timelapse of the event on my Vimeo
channel here. 20
March 2015 Solar Eclipse! I shall attempt to view
and photograph this wonderful spectacle somewhere in
Shetland - here's hoping for clear skies. The image
above gives a rough indication of what it will look like
here in Shetland with the Sun about 98% obscured by the
Moon at about 9.43 AM. If you want to see it totally
obscured you'll need to be a couple of humdred miles
north of Shetland - the only land that will witness a
total eclipse will be in Faeroe andf Svalbard.
